The government have announced that a majority of pensioners in England and Wales will now receive the winter fuel payment this year. More details will be available by the end of June but below is what has been published so far:

👥Who will receive it?

You need to:

  • Live in England or Wales in the qualifying week of 15–21 September 2025
  • Be born before 22 September 1959
  • Have an individual annual income of up to £35,000

💷 What will you receive?

  • £200 per household for most people
  • £300 per household where there is someone aged over 80

📌How does it work?

1. The payment will be made automatically

2. Those who have income over the threshold will have the payment automatically taken back through their tax code (or via self-assessment tax return if you complete one)

3. Households of 2 pensioners:

  • the household amount received is split
  • E.g. household receiving £200 – if 1 person earns over £35k but the other doesn’t, then only £100 will be clawed back
  • One exception – if you are claiming pension credit then there is no split, but then the clawback won’t affect you anyway

4. You can opt out of receiving the payment in the first place – the DWP are currently developing a simple system to do this
