Do you have self-employed or property income? If yes, then from 6 April 2026 you may need to submit quarterly returns to HMRC under the Making Tax Digital for Income Tax initiative.

✅ Will this apply to me?

Phase 1 will initially apply to sole traders and landlords with total income from self-employment and property of over £50,000 (before expenses or taxes are deducted) in the 2024/25 tax year.

Phase 2 will apply to the 2025/26 tax year, and the income threshold reduces to £30,000.

From April 2025, HMRC will be writing to you to let you know that you may need to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

📌 What does this mean for you?

  • You will need to be signed up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax by April 2026 if you are in Phase 1 above (Phase 2 from April 2027).
  • Starting from 6 April 2026, instead of submitting just one annual self-assessment tax return, you will need to submit a return quarterly.
  • You will need to maintain your accounting records digitally.
  • Submissions to HMRC will now need to be done via MTD-compliant software.
