There are plenty of assumptions people make when they hear the word “accountant.” Some are mildly amusing, others just plain wrong. So, we thought we’d take a moment to set the record straight on a few of the most common myths we hear.

  1. “Accountants are boring.” 😴
This one’s subjective, of course, but it’s a persistent myth. Sure, tax chat might not light up a room, but accountants are people first. At Jupps, we’ve got team members who spend weekends racing sailing boats, performing on stage, or singing ABBA at music festivals. There’s a lot more to us than spreadsheets and calculators!

  2. “You must love maths to be an accountant.”
While accounting involves numbers, it’s more about understanding frameworks, interpreting data  and applying ever-changing regulations in practical ways. Maths plays a role, but technology like Excel and other accounting software take care of much of the number-crunching. The real value is in knowing how to make the numbers work for clients.

  3. “It’s a male-dominated profession.” 👨‍💼👩‍💼
Not entirely true. According to ONS (Office for National Statistics) data for the year ending March 2023:
    • Chartered and certified accountants: 44.6% women
    • Taxation experts: 45.3% women
    • Bookkeepers, payroll managers, and wages clerks: nearly 70% women
At Jupps, we’re proud to say we’re split 50:50. The industry is evolving – and balance is improving all the time.

  4. “AI is going to replace accountants.” 🤖
AI will definitely play a bigger role in the industry, but there’s no substitute for human insight. Rules change regularly, clients’ circumstances vary and navigating complexity with judgment, care and context is something AI just isn’t there with (yet). Automation can help – but it won’t replace experience.

  5. “Accounting services are expensive.” 💷
We hear this now and then but it’s important to remember – you’re not just paying for our time; you’re paying for our expertise. A tax return that takes 30 minutes didn’t always take 30 minutes. It’s the product of years of learning, training, and experience. If it were truly that simple, you’d probably do it yourself.

  6. “Accountants manage your money.” 💼
Not quite. While we can help you forecast, budget , and plan, the decisions – and the follow-through – rest with you. We advise. You steer the ship. Even management accountants provide insights, not control over the purse strings.

  7. “Only big companies need accountants.” 🏢
Actually, most of our work is with small to medium-sized businesses and sole traders. Whether it’s tax planning, compliance, or helping set up the right financial systems, the earlier you get good advice, the better.

✨ If you’re a business owner or sole trader looking for real, practical accounting support (with minimal dullness involved), we’re always happy to chat.
