Do you have self-employed or property income? If yes, then from 6 April 2026 you may need to submit quarterly returns to HMRC under the Making Tax Digital for Income Tax initiative.

âś… Will this apply to me?

Phase 1 will initially apply to sole traders and landlords with total income from self-employment and property of over ÂŁ50,000 (before expenses or taxes are deducted) in the 2024/25 tax year.

Phase 2 will apply to the 2025/26 tax year, and the income threshold reduces to ÂŁ30,000.

From April 2025, HMRC will be writing to you to let you know that you may need to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

📌 What does this mean for you?

  • You will need to be signed up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax by April 2026 if you are in Phase 1 above (Phase 2 from April 2027).
  • Starting from 6 April 2026, instead of submitting just one annual self-assessment tax return, you will need to submit a return quarterly.
  • You will need to maintain your accounting records digitally.
  • Submissions to HMRC will now need to be done via MTD-compliant software.
